How Much Water for WHAT????

You never realize how much water to takes to make something, wash something, do something... From Foods to Clothes here's a quick list of how much water is used to make them. Maybe in the future you'll weigh your purchase or buy alternatives instead.

  1. A stonewash for 150 pairs of jeans takes 150 kilos of pumice stone and more than 200 gallons of water. Depending on how faded the look will have to be, they will be washed somewhere between 30 minutes and 6 hours.

  2. 1 lb Tomatoes - 23 gallons

  3. 1 lb Lettuce - 23 gallons

  4. 1 lb Apples - 49 gallons

  5. 1 lb Oranges - 64 gallons

  6. 1 lb Beef - 5,214 gallons!!!! Really makes you think doesn't it?

  7. Brush your teeth? - 2 to 5 gallons

  8. Wash the car? - 50 gallons

  9. Use the dishwasher? - 8 to 15 gallons

  10. Flush the toilet? - 1.5 to 4 gallons (each flush)

  11. Take a shower or bath? - 17 to 24 gallons

  12. Run the washing machine? - 35 to 50 gallons (each load) obviously this is for a normal top loading washer.

Marcie, would you be interested in writing a monthly post about local initiatives toward sustainable practices and building, share tips for reducing, reusing, and recycling at home, etc., for agenerouspeople.com?

I really think my readers could benefit from your experience and initiative at home. Send me an email at contact [at] agenerouspeople.com.
